I've just upgraded from version 16 to version 17 and I have a problem:

Before:
If I highlighted a word on a web page page, right-clicked on it and selected "search google.com for [word]", then Iron would open a new tab containing a Google search results page for the selected word.

After:
If I repeat the step above, Iron opens a new tab that takes me directly to the number 1 ranked page for that word. i.e. no search results page.

Does anyone know how I can get it to revert to the old functionality?

I have the normal behaviour in iron 17

Try creating a new profile (first save your bookmarks, passwords - you could use the synchronize):
