Turn off auto update plugins, how to?

Is it possible to turn off auto update plugins, by globally settings ?
Of course it is possible by editing the url https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx in the plugins files, but for 10 plugins it is some effort.
And when you need to manually update you have to edit the URL again. But this is some workaround.
In my opinion, when the browser connects (no matter what service) and downloads and installs files completely beyond our control is unacceptable and dangerous behavior.
