Can we assume Iron is immune to latest Chrome threat?

Postby HarryStottle » Fri Jan 25, 2019 11:32 am

I refer to this story about Google threatening to make ad blocking more difficult. My first reaction was to think "well at least that won't affect us Iron users" but then I realised I didn't have a firm basis for that assumption.

I'm obviously aware that Iron is a fork from the basic Chromium code but I don't know how that works in detail. If google issue new code, how selective can the Iron developers be? Presumably omitting some changes would render Iron unusable on sites designed with vanilla Chrome in mind.

So, when threats like this come along, can (and will) Iron protect us from the change?

The built-in Iron adblocker (adblock.ini) will not be affected by this

that is interesting but doesn't really address my question.

I use adblock plus - and wish to continue using it because I know how to use it.
I also use umatrix and occasionally uorigin.

My understanding is that the Chrome changes will impact on those. Will that damage carry through to Iron?

The problem is simple:
Even when we undo the Chrome modifications - uBlock and others will stop development for any Chrome related stuff when 99% of the users can't use it any longer

unless of course, enough Chrome users get sufficiently motivated to switch to Iron...

Not if a sufficient number of Chromium based browsers also agree not to cripple the webRequest API. It might be worth reaching out to those responsible for other Chromium based browsers like Vivaldi, Brave (even though it has a built in ad blocker it does not have anything comparable to uMatrix without addons), Iridium, and possibly even Comodo to see if some kind of agreement can be reached regarding said APIs.

ah, now that is good news.

I must have skimmed the original story, because I can't remember encountering a claim that the ad blockers were SLOWING page load!! That's a bizarre claim.
