New Iron-Version: 3.0.197 Alpha for Linux

Beitragvon SRWare » Mi Aug 12, 2009 7:40 pm

You can download an Alpha-version of Iron for Linux now:
http://www.srware.net/downloads/iron-linux.tar.gz

Update:
The download now contains Iron for Linux 3.0.197 and introduces some improvements like a nearly complete options-dialog and flash-support.
To enable flash you have to start iron for linux with --enable-plugins as parameter (can cause instability).

Attention:
This is an alpha release, which means that there are many things uncomplete or broken.

SRWare,
Have any idea how to make Iron realize that I have flash player installed in Ubuntu Jaunty?

BTW, so far Iron runs great in Ubuntu. Very nice.

Thanks, dude.

Never mind. I found the answer. It's surprising what doing a Google can do for you.

For those Iron Linux users who might not know how to do here's how I got it going...

I placed the iron-linux folder in home. I renamed it to just .iron (the "." hides it).

I changed directories to the plugins folder...

cd .iron/plugins

I then made a system link to libflashplayer.so with the following command...

ln -s /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so

One last step. You need to create a Desktop launcher for Iron (it just easier that way instead of going to Home then to my Iron folder and then executing iron... :) ).

Go to Desktop>right-click in an open space and select Create Launcher. A box pops open. Leave the Type settings alone (it has Application in it)>name it under Name (I called mine obviously Iron)>under the Command setting put...

/home/bob/.iron/iron --enable-plugins (in my case)

If you left yours the default name then it would look like...

/home/your-user-name/iron-linux/iron --enable-plugins

Pick an icon for Iron (SRWare posted a PNG file for Iron a while back in a thread I started...move that iron png to /usr/share/pixmaps) and click OK. A launcher will appear and you'r ready to go.

Now to figure out how to get my adblock.ini working.

Later...

Another happy downloader here. The last version of Iron was unusable on my Fedora 11 system (pages rendered as a collage of random parts of my screen, like the clock, other applications, etc), but this version is so stable (even with flash-plugin, which was detected out of box for me) I feel comfortable using it for everyday browsing! As soon as adblock (and maybe a noscript clone ;) ) gets working I will completely switch.

Thanks!

Thanks for the work on the Linux version! The last alpha wasn't usable at all for me, but this one is working great! 8-)

Hello, I'm running 3.0.197.0 for Linux and liking it a lot. But I'd like to know how secure it is (in particular, compared to the Windows versions). Could somebody point me to information on how sandboxing was implemented in this Linux version? This page
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/LinuxSandboxing
is inconclusive.

Thanks for any answer and for all the work on Linux versions!

I'm not sure if this is the place to report a bug or not, but I'll do it anyways. :-)

Using Iron under Ubuntu (slick install thanks to previous poster...thanks!). LOVE it. Super fast. However, whenever I navigate to gmail, my CPU usage spikes to 100%. It's not a big deal for me, but thought you'd like to know.

Thanks for making a great product!

Hey,
For some reason I can't executre chrom on Ubuntu 9.04.
When I execute it just by double clicking it does nothing.
When I execute from the prompt (./) it writes illegal instructions.

What am I doing wrong?

THANKS!

Did you allow the binary to be an executable? Right click it, Properties > Permissions > check "Allow executing file as program".
