While the main improvements are listed as improved speed, security fixes and mathml ..... the biggest problem remains that it (as with the previous two versions) crashes on launch under Snow Leopard :(

So, despite listing that the rqmts are for OS X 10.6 or greater / Intel ..... I guess that the days of it supporting 10.6 are over. Would someone at SRWare please comment about this. This is the third time I've downloaded a version, only to find that I have to remove it an reinstall version 21.0.1200.0.

Now that SRWare Iron is no longer support on Snow Leopard, you can run Chromium which DOES support Snow Leopard. I recommend using a Chromium installation & update tool called Chromatic. You can download it here: http://mrgeckosmedia.com/applications/info/Chromatic

What Chromatic will do is keep your Chromium installation up-to-date for you. You will need to manage the privacy settings yourself, but once set they shouldn't change. Go to your Chromium settings:
(1) Make sure you do not automatically "Sign In" to Chromium with any Google accounts.
(2) Turn off "Omnibox" under the Search setting.
(3) Change from using Google for search to Ixquick. https://www.ixquick.com/
(4) Under "Advanced Settings" click the "Content Settings" and set your cookie preferences
(5) Uncheck all 5 boxes under the "Privacy Settings" in "Advanced Settings".
(6) Install the Ghostery extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/sear ... s/ghostery
(7) Install the Adblock etension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/sear ... ns/adblock

Its too bad SRWare has dropped support for Snow Leopard, but we do have other options. Using Chromium/Chromatic is one of them.

Many thanks to SRWare for giving us Iron. We loved it while it lasted.

Disappointingly, application is still not code signed. Very disappointing for a supposedly more secure alternative.

Getting Flash back

Post by rsadix »

Iron v 24.0.1350.0 is working fine on OSX 10.8.2. However, I had to change the method I use to get flash installed. I only use the flash plugin through iron on my mac. I prefer not to have any other apps have access to flash, including Safari. I used to use Google Chrome as a way to keep flash up to date, then copy the flash plugin from chrome to iron. This stopped working when Chrome changed to pepper flash.

What I eventually learned is that you can rename the PepperFlashPlayer.plugin, used in Chrome to: Flash Player Plugin for Chrome.plugin and it will work in iron. But you can also download the flash plugin directly from adobe and remove Chrome from your system.

Here is a process to install the flash plugin into iron without having flash available to other programs on your system.
  1. Download the latest flash player plugin for Chrome from Adobe
  2. Go ahead and open the file location /Library/Internet Plug-Ins (press the option key from the finder go menu to locate /Library)
  3. Install the flash plugin from the installer you just downloaded
  4. A new file Flash Player Plugin.plugin will be installed into the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder (if you keep this file here, all browsers will have access to flash)
  5. Right-Click and Show Package Contents of the application: SRWare Iron.app and navigate to: Contents/Versions/Version number/Chromium Framework.framework/Internet Plug-ins/
  6. Copy the file: Flash Player Plugin.plugin to the iron Internet Plug-Ins folder and rename it to: Flash Player Plugin for Chrome.plugin
  7. Delete Flash Player Plugin.plugin from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins

Chromatic stopped working for me, however I found another place to download Chromium. If you're running Snow Leopard 10.6 you can get the latest stable Chromium here:

I know you probably have your hands full with version 26 for windows. But was just wondering is there an update scheduled for Mac? (I use both OSX and Windows and Iron is my go-to browser!).

Again, thank you for your continued hard work.
