SRWare Iron and EME?

Postby TheArkive » Fri Jun 20, 2014 4:56 pm

Just wondering how/if you plan on dealing with EME (Encrypted Media Extensions) ... this topic has thrown Mozilla for a bit of a loop, but they seem to have found a half-way decent compromise, although some of the die-hard Mozilla fans are getting outraged at the compromise.

Shorter version:

Long detailed version:

Original Mozilla blog post:

It's said that Google and Microsoft has already included the code to allow EME in their browsers. Is this a part of SRWare Iron? Has it been modified or removed?

Just curious... I'm not so sure we'll be able to easily avoid it no matter what browser we use (in the semi-near future).

I'm a long time Firefox user and I don't know what this is. I know FF will now play videos w/o flash based on something built into HTML5*; is this related? I read that short version link but it still doesn't seem clear. I reluctantly accepted Flash because it seemed necessary if you ever want to watch a video. I never did use Silverlight (don't trust some of the MS for security). Will this new thing eliminate such plugins?

[*I've had some trouble getting embedded vids to play this way, but they work on a separate tab.]

As far as what I read, apparently EME actually will replace plugins (eventually) ... but I honestly can't see that happening 100%. Many plugins are very widely used.

Hopefully EME won't actually replace all plugins. That really wouldn't make sense to me anyways. Even if it did, I'm sure FF and SRWare would maintain compatibility with those plugins, and most likely many web developers would still use them. (hopefully)

I just posted this question to the developer to see what he had in mind for SRWare. I started considering not using FF because of EME...
