Cant set Iron as default in Windows 8

When I start Iron it tells me it's not set as the default browser. When I click to set it as such, a popup window "How do you want to open this type of link (http)?" shows up with Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera to choose.
So I went to Default Programs. I found Chromium with the description of Iron and I clicked "set this program as default". I thought that was it, but when I clicked a link in my instant messenger it opened in Firefox. So I went back to Default Programs, but this time clicked "Choose defaults for this program". I saw "http" and "https" set to Firefox. So I clicked them to set them to Chromium/Iron, but this setting is not remembered! Firefox remains as default.

I can select Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera as defaults without any problem.

I even tried adding stuff into the registry based on this http://superuser.com/questions/368814/h ... -windows-7 but it doesn't make any difference.

What the hell am I supposed to do now?
