Latest Adblock.ini?

Hey all,

After a lot of Googling and looking around, I can't seem to find an adblock.ini that's been updated within the past 2 months.

This one is extremely outdated: http://www.fanboy.co.nz/iron/complete/adblock.ini
And the suggestion here has a ton of false positives (adobe, yahoo, etc): http://www.srware.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2343

Is there still an adblock.ini that is updated, supported, and maintained?
Any help from you guys would be great! :D

Hi!

According to the Fanboy Adblock Homepage ( http://www.fanboy.co.nz/iron.html ), the list 'adblock.ini' is no longer actively maintained. There is a suggestion to use Adblock Plus for Chrome instead. I'm testing this application right now and it seems to be running properly. I cannot notice any difference between keeping the old adblock.ini in place and running with an empty one. Some reviews states that the application Adblock Plus is making the browser sluggish, I haven't seen this yet though.

If any new information comes to my attention, I will check back!

I don't want to install another extension, especially one that takes up a lot of memory, when something like an updated version of fanboy's adblock.ini list will do the same job.

I can also vouch that AdBlock Plus extension in Chrome makes the whole browser significantly slower and uses a lot of memory. It seems the best solution is to use Fanboy's Opera List urlfilter.ini.

See: http://www.srware.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=6364
I just replaced '*' in urlfilter.ini with nothing, saved it as adblock.ini for Iron and it works.
Also replacing # via editor by #[blank] is a good idea.
There is also a VBS script there that can do the necessary replacements from Opera urlfilter.ini to Iron ad

Thank you for your replies!

@Bigdjembe: If you have a fast internet, you will not notice, but due to limitations placed by Google on the Chromium browser (and therefore all its alternatives such as SRWare Iron), extensions cannot block ads but only cover them up. The adblock.ini file prevents the browser from loading ads and therefore saves bandwidth and time (and all the ads add up!). This is mainly because Google makes money off advertising so does not want their ads completely blocked. Here is an excerpt from How-To-Geek here: http://www.howtogeek.com/108384/6-alter ... le-chrome/
"Wrong about Ad Block and Ad Block Plus. They can block some but not most. It’s a limitation placed on them from Chrome. The extensions can’t hook into the browser the way they do on Firefox. I have Chrome installed as well as Iron and i can tell you that there is a very noticeable speed difference between the two. Also I see ads load and then disappear in Chrome all the time. They are getting covered up not blocked. I see this on Windows, Linux, and Mac. Iron uses an ad block ini file, like Opera, to block ads not cover them up."
As of now I still cannot find a suitable adblock.ini. Any other help would be appreciated!

obsolete.

since chrome 17 is active webrequest API which gives support to adblock or adblockplus extensions (ABP - the same creator of the ABP for firefox) for real adblocking.

Thanks mapx. That's really nice to know - I guess that means adblock.ini is now obsolete as well.

No it's not obsolete, you just have to populate it with what you want to block.
Try renaming it in the install folder and see what happens.
Last time I tried Iron without it, it wouldn't run.
I'm not saying to make your own list(long and tedious), just saying the ini file needs to be present.
I use AdBlcok Plus now, but I was a big advocate of adblock.ini in the past when there was a good update source.

the srware guys could eliminate the requirement to have adblock.ini in the srware folder (even empty)
